What Volatility Approaches Have Worked in 2017?

2017 is set to go down as the least volatile year in decades for the US equities markets.  One month realized volatility for the S&P 500 has been in the single digits, at times even low single digits, for all of this year.  VIX, which is a measure of the market’s expectations for volatility, should finish 2017 with an all-time low when looking at the average closing price in 2017.  The chart below shows the high, low, and average for VIX by year going back to 1990.

Picture this. A precocious five year old girl stares greedily at the Kit-Kat in her hand, waiting to devour it. An adult family friend walks by and asks if she is willing to share the Kit-Kat with him. Thinking fast, she pouts: “Well, if I have to share with you, then I would have none of it.” “Ok” says the man, as he takes the Kit-Kat and pops it in his mouth before she can even blink.

The little girl got what she wanted, but not really.

Dubai, 24th September 2017: The Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange’s Dubai India Crude Oil Futures (DICO) contract has been recognised as the ‘Best New Derivatives Contract’ at this year’s FOW Global Investor Asia Capital Markets Awards 2017.

The ceremony took place late last week at the Marina Mandarin Hotel in Singapore, and gathered the trading and derivatives industry leading experts to receive awards highlighting innovation, excellence and outstanding performance over the past year.
