Phillip Capital’s 6th Trading Asia Symposium Recap

On October 16th, Phillip Capital hosted the 6th Annual Trading Asia Symposium event at the Union League Club of Chicago. The event featured 7 Asian exchanges (SGX, HKEX, ICE SG, JPX, KRX, TAIFX and DME, an event newcomer) and an IT vendor within the Asian space, BSO. Our exclusive sponsors of the event were Colt Technology, CQG, Eventus System and TOCOM. The full-day event included over 200 industry professionals.
Taking to heart this year’s theme, “Learn Asia, Taste Asia, Trade Asia”; the organizational team at Phillip Capital wanted attendees to fully experience Asia without stepping foot on the continent. To create the full experience, we wanted to evoke all five senses to the maximum, so the challenge was creating an event which could appeal to the attendees’ sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. Furthermore, the challenge of the event was to be enjoyable and informative at the same time. This was the audacious goal set by the team.
At the start, Guests were treated to a tote bag with goodies such as the exclusive Coffee Luwak from Indonesia and specialty reverse sequin T-shirts that showed the yin and yang symbol on one side and the Trading Asia symbol on the other.
Next, Lynette surprised the audience with a group exercise to emphasize the things we all have in common, followed by her speech, “That’s Us”. Maureen Downs moderated the first panel and David Klotz moderated the second one. Each panel highlighted the latest exchange updates and economic outlooks. FIA Head of Asia, Bill Herder, also gave an interesting speech about his eye witness view of the growth of Asia.

Guests were then treated to a sumptuous “authentic” meal from four curated restaurants in Chicago featuring Korean, Malaysia, Thai and Indonesian food.
Unlike previous years, the event was extended following lunch and the afternoon events included Coffee-Cupping (who doesn’t like the aroma of Coffee?) and workshops which were deliberately smaller to make it more interactive in nature. The topics of the workshops were:
Why Singapore can be your base to trade Asia? – SGX Presentation and Enterprise Singapore Presentation
It’s all in your mind - Creating performance mindsets by Russ Rausch – Presentation
Trading in China for foreigners – Summary
We ended the action-packed day with a lucky draw raffle to conclude.
Attendees commented on how much they enjoyed the event, and many have said they look forward to the event each year. Once again, Phillip Capital is thankful for all the exchanges and co-sponsors for their support.
